Trek & Climb: Nevado Veronica (5,893m)

Considered within the 3 giants of Cusco; the snowy Veronica is one of the most important mountains of the Cusco region. After all, though its summit does not reach 6,000m; this expedition is a committed ascent. Its closeness to the jungle does not ensure good weather; but it does guarantee an immense landscape.

Preparing for this Peru Adventure trek you’ll be descending from Cusco to the Sacred Valley. Following then; the trek through the Lares valley will help you to acclimate. After all this is good preparation to cross the Urubamba Mountain Range.

This is a technical adventure and is suitable for those with some climbing experience; to get the most out of the trip expedition. Accommodation in the Sacred Valley & Cusco along with other parts of the trip are customisable.

Itinerary

Expedition briefing will take place today & along with a tour into the Sacred Valley, stopping along at towns like Pisac, Chinchero, Maras & Moray.

Overnight: Sacred Valley (Calca)

Leaving very early from the Sacred Valley to travel 3 hours to the town of Cuncani where we will start a trek that will take us to 4,400 masl and then descend to the 3,800 masl where we will organize our camp.

Overnight: Camp Huacahuasi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You’ll leave at 8am to reach 4,600 masl in the Andes mountain range where we will see our next targets the Helamcoma and Veronica nevadas.

Overnight in Ollantaytambo
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

You’ll leave at 8am and travel for 1 hour to Thastayoc 4,000 meters above sea level, the point where you’ll begin your approach hike from the Helamcoma nevada base camp to 4,400 meters above sea level in the Lanlaluyoc lagoons.

Leaving very early to begin the ascent during the first hours before dawn you’ll reach the glacier. Already with daylight approaching you’ll begin the crossing the glacier and approach the last ridge where you’ll have a rock III climb after reaching the summit. From here there is an amazing view of the snowy Veronica and Salkantay, then you’ll begin to descend to the city of Ollantaytambo to continue to the city of Urubamba where you’ll rest and have a chance to celebrate your first summit.

After having enough sleep to recover your energy, you’ll have the possibility to enjoy the infinite number of activities that the Sacred Valley of the Incas offers us since. You can visit world-renowned ceramics artists or head to a short via ferrata that offers us spectacular views of the valley or just relax in your hotel.

Leaving at 7 o’clock in the morning and heading towards the Malaga pass, where you’ll enter the reserved communal area of ​​Thastayoc and from 4,400 masl you’ll descend to 4,200 masl and then climbing to 4,800 masl to the base camp in a steep ascent and dominated by the characteristic forests of “Queñas“, the trees that grow highest in the world. You’ll overnight here at the basecamp of the Nevado Veronica.

This morning leaving at 6:30 in the morning heading towards the advanced camp where you’ll cross some unstable moraines and climb small sections of III ° of rock not bigger than 20m as well as slopes of snow and ice between 45 ° to 60 ° until reaching the north ridge where you’ll look for a platform to be able to establish our advanced camp at 5,300 masl.

Very early in the morning, you’ll begin your ascent crossing imposing cracks and progressing on slopes between 45 to 60 ° to the summit which you’ll arrive to within the first hours of the morning. When the clouds of the jungle are still down in the valley; the views from 5900 meters are simply breathtaking! You’ll begin the descent doing some rappels to the advanced camp where you¿’ll eat and continue your ascent to the base camp to spend the night there.

Leaving mid-morning you’ll begin your descent through the Thastayoc ravine trying to observe part of the unique fauna of this valley as the “Churrete real” of which there are only approximately 300 in existence and this privileged valley is its habitat. At noon our transport will be waiting for us on the road at the exit of the valley to drive to the sacred valley where we will have a celebration lunch to reflect on an incredible adventure then you’ll transfer to the city of Cusco.

Today is a rest & relaxation day or you can leave from Cusco Airport to head further onwards to your home destination.
